Butane Gas Bottles

What is Butane Gas?

Butane is a flammable, colorless alkane hydrocarbon (C₄H₁₀) that is a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) with applications in fuels, lighters, and portable heating.

Butane is extracted from crude oil and natural gas, most of the time Butane is extracted from a rafinerie. To transport and store it, Butane is put under pressure in a liquid form, this enables it to be used as a gas at room temperature.

Even if Butane is non-toxic in small amounts, its high flammability means it requires careful handling in well-ventilated areas to prevent explosions and adverse health effects from inhalation, such as dizziness and nausea.

Butane Gas Key Applications

Butane Gas For Heating

Heater

Butane gas bottles are widely used as a reliable heat source in both residential and industrial settings. Its ability to generate consistent, high temperatures makes it ideal for several heating tasks, including:

  • Portable Heaters: Butane-powered portable heaters are commonly used for outdoor activities like camping or in environments where access to electricity is limited. They provide instant warmth and are easy to use.
  • Space Heating: Butane gas is used in some small space heaters, offering an efficient solution for heating smaller rooms or temporary workspaces without the need for bulky electric heaters.
  • Emergency Heating: In the event of power outages, butane gas heaters serve as a valuable backup option for maintaining a comfortable temperature in homes or other critical spaces.

Butane Gas For Brazing & Soldering

Butane’s high and precise heat output makes it a top choice for brazing and soldering applications, where controlled and reliable heat is crucial. Some key areas where butane gas is utilised for brazing include:

  • Metalworking: Butane gas torches are frequently used for brazing metals like copper, brass, and aluminium. The ability to create strong, durable joints without melting the base materials makes butane ideal for both professional and hobbyist metalworkers.
  • Plumbing: For plumbing repairs, butane gas is used to heat and join copper pipes with a filler material, ensuring a leak-proof and secure bond.
  • Jewellery Making: Butane’s precision flame is ideal for small-scale brazing, soldering, and setting stones in jewelry crafting, where heat control is essential to prevent damage to delicate materials.

Portable Cooking Stoves: Compact butane gas stoves are widely used for outdoor cooking, providing chefs with a reliable source of heat for camping gas, picnics, or food trucks.

Energas Propane Gas Bottles and Cylinders

Butane Gas vs. Propane Gas

It’s important to understand the difference between butane and propane to choose the right fuel for your needs. Even if there are both types of LPG, they have distinct properties that make them suitable for different applications.

Boiling Point & Performance

Butane gas has a higher boiling point than propane, it will work best in warmer climates and is ideal for indoor use. It’s the perfect fit for portable heaters and small space heaters. Propane, on the other hand, performs better in colder weather, it’s the best gas for outdoor applications like patio heaters and BBQs, as well as for industrial heating.

Energy Density & Common Uses

Butane is a highly efficient fuel, offering a slightly higher energy output per kilogram than propane. One kilogram of propane provides approximately 12.86 to 14.02 kWh of energy, while one kilogram of butane provides about 12.44 kWh of energy.
This makes it a great choice for portable cooking stoves and camping gas. Propane, thanks to its ability to withstand colder temperatures, is the go-to gas for a wider range of heavy-duty, outdoor, and industrial applications, including large-scale heating and powering forklift trucks.

Butane Gas Safety

Even if Butane is a safe and efficient fuel, it's essential to handle it with care to prevent accidents.

Prolonged contact with liquid butane is not safe for skin, as it can cause frostbite. Butane is also highly flammable and requires careful handling in well-ventilated areas to prevent explosions. Always store and use butane bottles in a space with adequate air circulation.

For your safety and peace of mind, always refer to the official Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for comprehensive guidelines.

All the questions you might ask about Butane

Can you use butane on a gas BBQ?

Yes, you can use butane for a BBQ, but propane is generally preferred for its better performance in colder weather and higher heat output. Always check your BBQ's manufacturer instructions to ensure you have the correct regulator for the type of gas you are using, as different gases require different regulators.

Is patio gas propane or butane?

Patio gas is a type of Propane gas sold in specific green-topped cylinders with a clip-on regulator, designed for outdoor use like BBQs and patio heaters, especially in colder weather due to propane's lower boiling point compared to butane. Butane is generally for warmer weather and requires a different screw-type regulator, whereas propane is the more popular and effective choice for most outdoor appliances year-round.

Why are butane based products restricted?

Butane-based products, specifically cigarette lighter refills, are restricted for sale to those under 18 in the UK because they can be misused by inhaling the butane for intoxicating purposes (known as «nitro» or «huffing»), a practice that is extremely dangerous and can lead to severe harm or death.
