What is Propane Gas?
Propane is a highly flammable, colourless, and odourless hydrocarbon gas (C₃H₈). It’s a byproduct of natural gas processing and crude oil refining. It's stored under pressure as a liquid in gas cylinders and is a major component of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).
For safety, a chemical with a distinct rotten-egg smell, such as ethyl mercaptan, is added to propane to make leaks detectable. Propane is widely used as a clean-burning fuel for heating, cooking, industrial equipment like forklift, and vehicles.
Propane Gas Key Applications
Propane Gas For Heating

Propane gas bottles and cylinders are used extensively for heating of properties (domestic, industrial, agricultural and commercial) where mains gas is either not readily available or for industrial/retail premises only certain spaces within the building or outside need heating. Used widely in caravans for heating and hot water and for patio heaters.

Propane Gas For Agriculture & Horticulture

Propane gas bottles are used to support heating of poultry enclosures especially during the breeding and chick rearing seasons - pheasant, quail, partridge, chickens, geese, turkeys, etc
Propane Gas For Metal Fabrication

Propane gas bottles are used in oxyfuel cutting and welding in metal fabrication by many industrial businesses.
Propane Gas For Fork Lift Trucks (FLT)

Forklift trucks (FLTs) are an important asset to your business and it is essential to choose the right fuel for cost, efficiency and environmental reasons. Energas offer a full range of propane gas bottles and cylinders suitable for use with FLT’s.
Propane Gas For Cooking

Propane gas bottles are used in many rural areas for cooking and hot water heating for domestic and commercial premises. Many customers also use propane gas bottle and cylinders for outdoor cooking events.
Propane Gas For HVAC-R (Heating, Ventilation, Air-conditioning and Refrigeration)

R290 is a derivative of Propane and is now used extensively for refrigeration applications for mainly commercial and industrial sites as is a natural refrigerant.

Propane Gas vs. LPG
Yes, propane is a type of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). But a LPG is not necessarily Propane Gases, it can also be Butane. LPG is in fact the broader term that will include Propane and Butane in there Liquide shape.
Even if Propane and Butane are two different LPG Gases there are differences that you need to bear in mind for selecting one for your activity. For instance, Propane gas will perform better in colder temperatures, making it a reliable heating fuel in the UK.
Thanks to its ability to perform better in colder temperatures, Propane is usually used as Patio Gas.
Propane Gas Safety

No, propane is not toxic for humans, this is why you can use it in various applications close to clients.
But there exists a potential danger in case of leaks (asphyxiation) in a non-ventilated area. This is why an odorant smell (like mercaptan) is added to the gas to detect any leaks. Always store propane cylinders upright in a well-ventilated area away from heat sources and naked flames.
How to use and store safely your propane bottles
For your safety, always turn off the gas supply at the cylinder valve when not in use and check all connections for leaks before operating an appliance.
For any gas appliance installation or service, you should always use a Gas Safe Registered engineer. You can find our official Safety Data Sheet for comprehensive information.

Questions you might have about Propane
Is propane the same as barbecue gas?
Yes, propane is the same as the fuel most commonly referred to as "barbecue gas," as it is a type of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) specifically suited for outdoor use like barbecuing. Even if other gasses like butane exist, propane is preferred for BBQs because its lower boiling point allows it to vaporize and perform reliably in a wider range of temperatures, including cold conditions.
Can a slow propane leak make you sick?
Yes, a slow propane leak can make you sick through prolonged exposure to the gas, which displaces oxygen in the air. This creates an oxygen-deficient environment that can cause symptoms like headaches, dizziness, and fatigue. This is why you need to store and use propane in a ventilated place.
Is propane heavier than air?
Yes, propane is heavier than air; it has a molecular weight of approximately 44 g/mol, compared to air's average molecular weight of about 29 g/mol. This means that if propane leaks, it will sink to the ground and collect in low-lying areas like basements, making leaks particularly dangerous because the gas can accumulate to explosive levels and may not dissipate.
